Roosevelt's YFC Club Is a Safe Haven for the Neglected
"I'm locked out of the house with no food, suffering abuse and neglect. I prayed that God would be my guardian. Then God showed up in my life."
Here is Kapua's story. "Somedays I feel like a prisoner, all alone. When I was 3, my dad died, overdosing on drugs. Ever since then, my mom has been a smothering warden. She has me on complete lock down and only allows me to go from home to school. She yells at and berates me. She only gives me food when she feels like feeding me. I have been transferred into three youth shelters, due to her abuse and negligence.
When I was able to start high school at Roosevelt, I decided that I would throw myself into academics. I quickly gained a 4.0 GPA. I am the Class Valedictorian, but my mom won't let me walk at graduation. One day, God showed up in my life when three of my friends invited me to youth group at a church. I felt a real sense of family and love there. I learned about Jesus and was hungry for more. But when my mom found out that I was going to church, she stopped me from going.
I prayed every night that God would guide and protect me. During the beginning of Senior year, my friends invited me to go to Roosevelt’s YFC Campus Life Club. There, I found a community of students and YFC leaders that loved me and loved Jesus. I felt that God had not abandoned me and reconnected me with a spiritual family, a real Ohana. Every Thursday, I know I can count on experiencing the love of God at club. God is using YFC in my life to show me that all is not lost. I am eternally grateful for all they do at my school and in my life.”
